We Can Choose When to Reset the Clock
We Can Choose When to Reset the Clock
By Russell Dalgleish
As the clocks went back across Scotland, we were reminded how deeply time shapes our lives.
The shift to winter brings shorter days, colder mornings, and streets blanketed with the beautiful colour of fallen leaves.

Sitting in a Glasgow café overlooking George Square, coffee in hand, I find myself reflecting on the week ahead — and on the freedom that comes from choosing how we spend our time.
The Entrepreneur’s Freedom
Owning my diary is one of the greatest rewards of entrepreneurship in Scotland. No boss. No office hierarchy. Just the ability to decide when, where, and how I work.
When I think back to my corporate career, I realise much of my stress came from others dictating my schedule — where I had to be and when. Whether as a young sales rep or later as a CEO, I rarely had control of my own time. (Ask any CEO to show you their diary — you’ll see what I mean.)
Redefining Productivity
Today, as an entrepreneur and business mentor, I design my own rhythm. I might process emails at 6am, block out deep-work sessions at 8pm, or take a long run in the middle of the day.
It’s not about working less — it’s about working better.
Technology as an Enabler
Modern technology has unlocked this freedom.
My smartphone, laptop, and the cloud have replaced the corner office, enabling me to stay connected, build partnerships, and mentor others — whether in Glasgow, London, or overseas.
Digital tools now empower a new kind of Scottish professional: flexible, global, and purpose-driven.
I’m no longer tied to a desk; I’m out in market, engaging directly with people, clients, and ideas that matter.
Wellbeing and Work-Life Balance
We talk increasingly about mental health at work, the pressures of our always-on culture, and the negative impact of technology. These concerns are real. Many people feel trapped in roles that don’t align with their values or energy.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. The tools that can overwhelm us can also liberate us, if used with intention.
A Moment to Reset
We have one life — a remarkable, fleeting gift.
And here, on this small island in the Atlantic Ocean, we have something even more precious: the freedom to choose.
As the clocks reset, perhaps we should too.
Reflect. Rebalance. Reclaim your time.
Because in business and in life, the greatest advantage we have is the power to choose wisely.
