I recently sat down with Ian Dowson for our latest SBN Spotlight to talk about the future of GovTech. I’ll be honest, my initial view of this sector was one of bloated IT contracts and slow-moving bureaucracy, but Ian completely flipped that script.

If you haven’t watched the full interview yet, you can watch it here.

Here are the three biggest things I learned from our conversation.

1.
NYC Tartan Week 2026: Why Scotland’s Future is Being Written in New York

With the 2026 New York City Tartan Week a few weeks behind us, I’ve found myself reflecting on something far deeper than the pipe bands and pageantry. While the sight of thousands marching down 6th Avenue never fails to stir the soul, this year’s trip felt different. It was a powerful reminder that while our heritage brings us together, Scotland’s true global currency is our intellectual capital and the boundless, quiet generosity of our diaspora.

From Connections to Cutting-Edge Innovation

The week began with the kind of organic energy you can’t manufacture. We gathered at The Shakespeare for a Scottish Business Network meetup that had no slides, no scripts, and no rigid agenda. It was simply the Scottish community, those who had travelled from home and those who have made New York their own, sharing stories and glass. In that room, the "small nation" complex vanished. You realise very quickly that our community doesn't just inhabit other regions, it influences them and is influenced by them.

The conversation shifted from the social to the transformative during our deep-dive into AI at the IBM Innovation Studio on One Madison Avenue. Sitting among senior minds of the Scottish diaspora, we watched how enterprise AI is fundamentally reshaping the global workplace.

Seeing IBM use themselves as "client zero" to test these tools before scaling them for brands like Ferrari was a masterclass in modern ambition. My biggest takeaway, however, was about our people. Scotland’s ethical, high-trust workforce is perfectly positioned to lead in the AI age, provided we are bold enough to grasp the tools that allow us to scale far beyond our borders.

<span style="display:...Read More

What Could the Future Hold? Rediscovering the Forest Beyond the Trees

There’s an old expression that feels more relevant today than ever: you “can’t see the wood for the trees.”

At its core, it speaks to a quiet but persistent challenge faced by leaders, entrepreneurs, and organisations alike — the tendency to become so absorbed in immediate demands that the broader vision fades into the background.

In today’s climate of constant urgency, this isn’t a failure of discipline; it’s almost inevitable.

The Trap of the Immediate

Whether it’s managing finances, delivering projects, or simply keeping operations running smoothly, the gravitational pull of the “now” is powerful. The inbox fills, deadlines loom, and attention narrows.

In that environment, strategy can become a luxury rather than a necessity.

Yet history — and indeed Scotland’s own legacy of innovation — shows that meaningful progress rarely comes from those who focus solely on maintenance. Transformation comes from those willing to step back, recalibrate, and reimagine.

Even the most forward-thinking leaders recognise this tension. The discipline is not in avoiding the trees altogether, but in knowing when to step away from them.

Stepping Back to Move Forward

Recent collaborative work across organisations such as the Scottish Business Network, Net Zero Nation, and Nexus.scot highlights the power of this perspective shift.

When teams take time to reflect on long-term goals — not just quarterly targets — something changes. Conversations move beyond incremental improvements and toward systemic opportunities.

Instead of asking “How do we keep things running?”, the question becomes “What should the future look like —...Read More

To celebrate the release of her second album, A’ Chailleach, Kim Carnie is set to take her trio on tour across the UK this May for the third and final leg of the release. The album - taking its rightful place at the top of The Scotsman’s top five albums of the year - will be performed alongside long-term collaborators Innes White and Megan Henderson (Breabach).

Her ‘velvet-voiced authority’ (The Scotsman), is widely recognised as the voice of one of Scotland’s leading bands, Mànran. Carnie moves fluidly between worlds: festival main stages, experimental collaborations, and screen soundtracks. Her voice has surfaced everywhere from Netflix’s Outlaw King to Black Mirror, carrying a rare ability to feel both ancient and immediate.

Collaboration sits at the core of her practice; from work with Malian griot supergroup Trio Da Kali to kora innovators Seckou Keita and Kadialy Kouyate, and American folk artist Dirk Powell. Carnie’s music thrives in the friction between cultures. On home ground and beyond, she has also shared stages with Carlene Carter, Lindsay Lou, and Joshua Burnside, touring with the Transatlantic Sessions under MD and 16-time Grammy winner Jerry Douglas.

A two-time Gaelic Singer of the Year (2021, 2025), she is equally in demand as a composer, with commissions spanning festivals, film, and game soundtracks. Her work on independent film ‘Kim Carnie: Out Loud’ has received over 30 awards at film festivals worldwide, including ‘Best Song in a Film’ at the Milan Independent Film Awards.

<p class="...Read More

A bold new Scottish fantasy feature film, Call of the Laoich, is now in development by Silly Wee Films — bringing Hollywood‑scale ambition home to Scotland. The live‑action adventure follows 17‑year‑old Highlands farm girl Freya, who is thrust into The Otherworld to train with the mighty Laoich — ancient Pictish Demigods and Demigoddesses — as her father aligns himself with a corrupt power seeking to steal Scotland’s throne in the 18th century.

With its sweeping mythology, rich Scottish heritage, and a story rooted in the Highlands, Call of the Laoich aims to showcase Scotland’s landscapes, talent, and creative industries on a global stage. The production plans to film in and around Falkirk and across the country, utilising Scotland’s exceptional cast, crew, and emerging young creatives.

As part of its commitment to community engagement and arts education, the production has partnered with Kiran’s Trust, a charity dedicated to supporting young people in creative fields. Together, they are offering students at Larbert High School a rare opportunity to contribute directly to the film’s development.

A select group of art and design students are currently working from the film’s script to create concept art for characters, mythical creatures, and key locations inspired by the 18th‑century Highlands.

From the stands of Murrayfield to the subtle shift in mindset, Scotland’s Six Nations campaign marked more than progress, it signaled a team coming of age.

Six Nations 2009 - Scotland vs Ireland

Scotland’s Six Nations: A Team Learning How to Win

I spent this years Six Nations live at Murrayfield. Something has changed, and it’s significant.

This is a team learning how to win.

The feeling inside Murrayfield

There is a moment before every home game at Murrayfield when the stadium holds its breath. The noise drops just enough, the anticipation builds, and then “Flower of Scotland” cuts through it. This year, it felt different. In previous years, there was always an edge of uncertainty, hope, yes, but also realism. This time, it felt more grounded.

From the opening whistle of each home fixture, Scotland played with clarity, controlled intent. They knew what they were trying to do.

Attack with purpose, not just flair

Under Gregor Townsend, Scotland’s identity has long been tied to attacking rugby. Among the lesser-acknowledged yet profoundly influential diasporas in the region are those of the Irish and Scottish peoples. Beginning in the 17th century and intensifying through the 19th century, waves of Irish and Scottish migrants motivated by famine, economic hardship, political repression, and colonial ambitions found their way to islands such as Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Grenada, and Trinidad. Though arriving from neighboring nations with distinct histories, the Irish and Scots often occupied overlapping social spaces in the Caribbean, particularly in the lower socio-economic strata. Their shared experiences of colonization, cultural erasure, and forced or impoverished migration created bonds of empathy and resilience that resonated across the Atlantic.

2.

In business, we fund what we believe drives long-term value.

We invest before markets mature.

We build capability before demand peaks.

We manage risk before volatility becomes visible in the numbers.

That discipline has served Scottish enterprise well.

Yet across much of our wider economic system, we still finance reaction more readily than prevention.

We pay for crisis.

We rarely structure capital to avoid it.

This is not a failure of ambition. Workforce pipelines weaken. Health challenges intensify. Local economies destabilise. The cost of late intervention rarely remains contained.

Prevention is frequently framed as a social ambition. It should also be understood as an...Read More
