The Tartan Trek: One Fan’s 3,000-Mile Walk for Men’s Mental Health
The Tartan Trek: One Fan’s 3,000-Mile Walk for Men’s Mental Health
By Scott Dalgleish
I caught up with Paisley-based fundraiser Craig Ferguson as he enters the final leg of his staggering coast-to-coast journey across the United States. Walking a full marathon distance every single day in a kilt, Craig is on a mission to reach Boston in time for Scotland’s opening World Cup match, all whilst aiming to raise £1 million for Scottish Action for Mental Health.

Craig is no stranger to extreme endurance challenges. I spoke to him to get a sense of the sheer scale of his current undertaking, known as the Tartan Trek. The inspiration for this journey was sparked by his previous 1,000-mile walk from Glasgow to Munich during the European Championship. As an inherently adventurous person, the moment Scotland secured qualification against Denmark, Craig pulled out his notepad and began mapping an even bigger challenge.
The Longest Route to the World Cup
When looking at the potential base locations across North America, the path from Los Angeles to Boston stood out as the ultimate test. It represents the longest possible transcontinental route.
The physical toll of walking over 3,000 miles is immense, and Craig has already traversed a punishing variety of terrains and climates. From the blistering desert heat of Nevada and Utah to the unpredictable plains of Kansas, where he even witnessed a tornado for the first time, every single mile has tested his resilience. Now having reached Washington DC, he has completed roughly 2,800 miles, leaving fewer than 500 miles until he hits the finish line in Massachusetts.

Sacrificing for the Cause
A journey of this magnitude is impossible to face completely alone. Craig is supported on the road by his childhood best friend, Matthew Allan, who made the ultimate commitment to the cause by quitting his job back home to drive the support vehicle. Matthew manages the daily logistics, providing food, water, and vital emotional encouragement as they move from state to state.
The primary driver behind this monumental effort is a deep dedication to men’s mental health. For Craig, the walk is a way to open up serious global conversations and break down the stigmas that often surround mental health struggles. The openness of his journey has resonated deeply with locals across America, with strangers regularly stopping to offer water and share their own personal experiences.
The Push for £1 Million
With the finish line firmly in sight for mid-June, the focus is now on hitting that ambitious £1 million fundraising target. The campaign has already raised over £170,000, but there is still a long way to go to maximize the impact for vital community services in Scotland. We are incredibly proud to support his mission, and the Saltire Sentinel will be providing daily updates on his progress as he makes his final push toward Boston.

My Takeaway: Craig embodies the absolute best of our global community. He is turning a passion for football into a life-changing movement for mental health support. If you are able to support his journey, please consider donating directly to the cause.
