NYC Tartan Week 2026: Why Scotland’s Future is Being Written in New York

By Scott Dalgleish

· Top Story

With the 2026 New York City Tartan Week a few weeks behind us, I’ve found myself reflecting on something far deeper than the pipe bands and pageantry. While the sight of thousands marching down 6th Avenue never fails to stir the soul, this year’s trip felt different. It was a powerful reminder that while our heritage brings us together, Scotland’s true global currency is our intellectual capital and the boundless, quiet generosity of our diaspora.

From Connections to Cutting-Edge Innovation

The week began with the kind of organic energy you can’t manufacture. We gathered at The Shakespeare for a Scottish Business Network meetup that had no slides, no scripts, and no rigid agenda. It was simply the Scottish community, those who had travelled from home and those who have made New York their own, sharing stories and glass. In that room, the "small nation" complex vanished. You realise very quickly that our community doesn't just inhabit other regions, it influences them and is influenced by them.

The conversation shifted from the social to the transformative during our deep-dive into AI at the IBM Innovation Studio on One Madison Avenue. Sitting among senior minds of the Scottish diaspora, we watched how enterprise AI is fundamentally reshaping the global workplace.

Seeing IBM use themselves as "client zero" to test these tools before scaling them for brands like Ferrari was a masterclass in modern ambition. My biggest takeaway, however, was about our people. Scotland’s ethical, high-trust workforce is perfectly positioned to lead in the AI age, provided we are bold enough to grasp the tools that allow us to scale far beyond our borders.

The Pride of the Parade

Of course, the emotional crescendo remains the Tartan Day Parade. There is a specific kind of magic in marching through the canyons of Manhattan alongside pipers, dancers, and plenty of dugs.

The sense of belonging was palpable this year, bolstered by the incredible work of the National Tartan Day New York Committee and the presence of Grand Marshal Sam Heughan. It’s a day that reminds the world that Scotland isn't just a place on a map, it’s a global family.

The Timeless Question: "How Can We Help?"

As I boarded the flight home, tired but genuinely enthused, one phrase I heard all week was playing on a loop: "How can we help?" It is the most powerful question in business, and the diaspora asks it constantly.

My mission now is to ensure the answer is ready. At SBN, we are focused on becoming an AI-native network that doesn't just store names in a database but actively breathes life into connections. If you are part of that global family and want a meaningful way back into the Scottish ecosystem, we are your first step. Let’s turn that "how can we help" into the next great Scottish success story.
