In a year marked by milestones and accolades, Bayne’s the Family Bakers, a cherished name in Scottish baking, has once again risen to prominence. Celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2025, the family-run bakery has been shortlisted for the prestigious World Championship Scotch Pie Awards, a testament to its enduring commitment to quality and tradition.

A Heritage Rooted in Tradition
The story of Bayne’s began in 1908 with John Bayne, who, alongside his brother Bill, ventured into the meat trade in Lochore, Fife. Recognizing the community’s needs, they expanded into baking, laying the foundation for what would become a Scottish institution. By 1954, the family had established their first bakery, and the Bayne’s morning roll, crafted using a slow-fermented method, quickly became a staple across the region.
Growth Through Generations
Under the stewardship of John’s son, Stanley Bayne, the bakery flourished. Facing the rise of supermarkets, Stanley shifted focus from butchery to baking, expanding the business from two shops to a network of 71 across central Scotland. Today, the bakery remains a family affair, with Stanley and his son John at the helm, and a fourth generation poised to continue the legacy.
Celebrating 70 Years with Expansion
Marking its 70th year, Bayne’s opened its 70th shop at Inveralmond Retail Park in Perth. This expansion reflects the company’s strategic growth, which began with a shop in Kinross in 1975 and has since extended to Perth, Dundee, Monifieth, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. In 2021, Bayne’s introduced its first drive-thru in Hillington, and in 2023, it enhanced its production capacity with a freezer extension at its Lochore bakery.
Joint Managing Director John Bayne highlighted the company’s growth: “A decade ago, we had 490 colleagues supporting 52 shops. Today, we’ve nearly doubled our workforce to 960, ensuring we continue to bring fresh, quality baking to communities across Scotland.”
Embracing Innovation While Honouring Tradition
Bayne’s has adeptly balanced tradition with innovation. While maintaining time-honoured baking methods, the company has embraced modern conveniences, offering click-and-collect services, home delivery through partnerships with Just Eat, Uber Eats, and Deliveroo, and a variety of hand-crafted celebration cakes.
Customer engagement initiatives like the coffee card reward program and the ‘Moments of Joy’, where staff can offer complimentary treats for special occasions, underscore Bayne’s commitment to community and customer satisfaction.
A Pie Worthy of Recognition
The recent shortlisting for the World Championship Scotch Pie Awards is a significant accolade for Bayne’s. This recognition places them among Scotland’s elite pie makers, celebrating their dedication to quality and craftsmanship. While the final results are pending, the nomination itself is a proud moment for the Bayne’s team and their loyal customers.
Looking Ahead
As Bayne’s celebrates its 70th anniversary, the future looks promising. With plans to open three to four new shops annually over the next decade and continued investment in product innovation and digital transformation, the bakery is poised for sustained growth. Their unwavering focus on quality, community, and tradition ensures that Bayne’s will remain a beloved fixture in Scotland’s culinary landscape for years to come.
